Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

Every month, you pay a premium in exchange for dental insurance coverage. Once you meet your deductible, your plan will cover a certain percentage of specific dental services up to a certain amount every year. Do note that dental insurance is focused mainly on prevention, so cleanings, checkups, and X-rays tend to receive higher coverage than other services. The idea is that if your dentist can prevent oral health issues from happening in the first place, you can avoid the costs associated with them.

What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers

Many dental plans have a 100-80-50 coverage structure. What this means is that preventive services (such as checkups and cleanings) are 100% covered, basic restorative care (such as fillings) have coverage around 80%, and major restorative care (such as dentures) is usually covered around 50%. This is not set in stone; you should contact your provider and review the specifics of your plan before you begin any kind of dental treatment. Remember that cosmetic dentistry isn’t normally included in dental insurance since it’s an elective treatment.
